Youth Worker for young mothers (12-month part time contract)
The Role
THRIVE: Together Harnessing Resilience, Inspiration, Validation & empowerment
The THRIVE program supports and empowers young mothers who are facing trauma, homelessness, domestic violence, drug and alcohol dependency, involvement with child protection services, and mental health issues to thrive as young parents and break the cycle of intergenerational disadvantage for their children.
The program is a specialist young mothers parenting program utilising peer support to build parenting capacity, provide wrap around trauma informed support, provide access to services, opportunities to create lasting memories for their children and respite.
The role will be responsible for:
Program development of structures, process and pathways
Leading a fortnightly young mother’s peer support group co facilitated by a peer support worker
Providing brief interventions to connect young mothers to community resources
Delivering an annual camping experience for the young mothers and their children
Supporting the peer worker to develop their skills and to co-lead the fortnightly peer support group
Collections and collation of data, outcomes and conducting reporting

Essential Qualifications and experience:
Minimum 3 years’ experience in the homelessness, social work, community services, health or equivalent sector
Qualification in social work, psychology, youth work, community services, health or equivalent sector
Eligible to work in Australia
NSW driver’s license
Desirable Experience and Skills:
Trauma informed support: Extensive experience in social work, youth work, or a related field, particularly with young mothers and/or vulnerable young people. A thorough understanding of trauma and how it impacts young people (in particular their parenting)
Understanding young people: An extensive understanding of the issues that impact young people facing disadvantage including homelessness, mental health, drug and alcohol dependency and domestic violence
Child Protection: Knowledge and understating of mandatory reporting, child safe practices and child protection
Program Management: Proven experience in coordinating and leading support programs, including planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Peer Support: Experience in facilitating peer support, with a focus on creating a safe and supportive environment as well as access to community services and resources
Collaboration with Community Services: Experience working with community services, including the Department of Community Services, mental health services, and domestic violence support organisations.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to connect with young mothers and convey information clearly.
Empathy and Sensitivity: High level of empathy and sensitivity when working with young mothers facing significant challenges.
Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to address issues as they arise and adapt the program to meet participants' needs.
Organisational Skills: Excellent organisational skills to manage program logistics, documentation, and reporting.
Cultural Competence: Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and understand the cultural contexts of participants.
Advocacy: Strong advocacy skills to support young mothers in accessing necessary services and resources.
Project Youth: Able to demonstrate a strong commitment to Project Youths vision and purpose
